Within a few minutes of their 160-pound catchweight affair, Estevan Payan found a way to avoid the ground game of former state high-school wrestling champion Alonzo Martinez.
He simply wore Martinez down with punches and made him hesitant to close the distance in a lopsided unanimous-decision loss.
The preliminary-card fight kicked off "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" and aired on Showtime Extreme. It took place at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and preceded the night's Showtime-televised main card.
In a striker vs. wrestler matchup, the boxer reigned supreme.
The fighters traded heavy punches and kicks early in the fight, though Payan got the better of it with countershots and a good takedown defense. Additionally, once he cut off corners, Payan landed multiple combinations and a good mixture of body punches and kicks. Martinez was never truly hurt, but Payan clearly won the first round.
Martinez opened the second round with some solid kicks, but Payan's hands were more active. He then stunned Martinez with a knee to the head during an ill-advised takedown attempt. Martinez slowed as the round wore on, and his face became a bloodied and swollen mess.
The third round offered little new, and and Payan continued connecting on more than half his punches while shutting down a half-dozen takedown attempts throughout the fight.
The performance earned him a unanimous-decision victory via 30-27 scores.
"I felt great out there," he said. "I work with so many tough guys. I've been trying to get here for such a long time, and now that I'm here, I plan on staying. ... I got the fight on Monday, so on short notice I didn't have great conditioning. Hopefully now I will get a couple of weeks' notice to show my full game out there."
Payan (13-3 MMA, 1-0 SF), a veteran of the Rage in the Cage promotion, now has won seven straight fights. Martinez (35-15-1 MMA, 0-1 SF), meanwhile, suffers just his second loss in 10 fights.
