'Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine' results: Woodley's wrestling shuts down Mein

Sure, it wasn't one for the highlight reel, and one judge threw in a confusing score, but it got the job done for Tyron Woodley.

The top welterweight contender did nothing to hurt his title hopes and used takedowns and a smothering top game to earn a split-decision victory over highly touted Canadian prospect Jordan Mein.

The main-card fight was part of "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" and aired on Showtime. It took place at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

After putting Woodley on the defensive in early-first-round standup, Mein fought off a takedown attempt that lasted for nearly a minute. Ultimately, he forced a stalemate and got a restart, where he landed an uppercut before Woodley scored his first takedown. Woodley's smothering top game kept Mein pinned for most of the round, though Woodley only got through a few meaningful strikes.

Woodley used a solid right to score another takedown in the second round, and his top game again was smothering. Mein landed a stream of elbows from his back. Woodley did little with his dominant position for nearly four minutes of the round, but he clearly was controlling the action.

In the final round, Mein attempted a lunging knee, but Woodley absorbed it and again took the fight to the mat, where the former University of Missouri All-American wrestler again shut down his opponent's offense. Mein benefited from a questionable standup with a minute remaining in the fight, but Woodley closed the distance and fought from the clinch for the remainder of the fight.

In the end, the judges awarded Woodley the split-decision victory via 28-29, 29-28 and 30-27 scores.

"Overall, I think I did well, but he's a tough kid to put away," said Woodley, who's been campaigning for a shot at Nick Diaz's vacated belt. "I should be fighting for the title next. Whoever it is, that's up to them. But right now, I'm just focusing on this victory. Jordan Mein is one of the toughest guys in our division. That's why I was excited to take it."

Woodley (10-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) remains undefeated with the victory, though his past three wins have come via decision. Mein (23-8 MMA, 1-1 SF) snaps a six-fight win streak with the defeat, which is just his second in 12 bouts.
